The aim is not simply to cover an area of ground. A professionally installed lawn needs a stable, free-draining base, clean edges, sensible levels and a layout that works with the rest of the garden. Getting those details right avoids the common frustrations of puddling, uneven joins, loose edges and a lawn that looks out of place after the first season.
Start with how the garden needs to work
The best starting point is everyday use, rather than choosing a grass sample. A front garden designed for kerb appeal has different requirements from a family garden with play equipment, a pet area or a small putting green. The right pile height, backing, infill approach and edging details depend on that use.
Think about where people enter the garden, where children run, where furniture sits and whether the lawn will meet a patio, decking or existing planting beds. A grass area that looks generous on a sketch can become awkward if it blocks access to the shed or leaves no practical route around the side of the house.
For pet-friendly gardens, it is worth identifying the preferred toilet area early. This can influence the choice of grass, the sub-base construction and the aftercare routine. Choose grass around performance, not just appearance
