How to Plan Garden Drainage Before a New Lawn

A lawn can look level and tidy on the day it is finished, yet still fail if water has nowhere sensible to go. Knowing how to plan garden drainage before landscaping starts is what prevents puddles, soft areas, sinking edges and water sitting against the house after heavy rain. It is particularly relevant in the North West, where prolonged wet spells quickly expose weaknesses in ground preparation.

Drainage does not always mean installing pipes across the whole garden. Often, the right answer is a carefully formed gradient, a permeable base and an outlet that suits the site. The best approach depends on the soil, the fall of the garden, surrounding paving and where rainwater naturally collects.

Start by understanding where the water goes now

Before choosing a drainage solution, look at the garden in wet weather if possible. A dry-day inspection is useful, but it rarely tells the full story. After rainfall, note where water pools, which parts of the lawn feel spongy and whether water runs towards the property, fence lines or patio doors.

Also look beyond the area being landscaped. A neighbour’s higher garden, a sloping driveway, downpipes or a large paved patio can all direct water into one corner of the garden. Installing a new lawn without accounting for these sources may simply hide the problem for a short time.

The condition of the existing ground offers useful clues too. Moss, patchy grass, compacted soil and standing water often point to poor drainage, but they do not all have the same cause. Heavy clay soil may hold water throughout the garden, while a single low spot may be caused by uneven levels rather than the soil itself.

Check levels before planning garden drainage

Water follows the lowest route available, so levels should be the starting point of any drainage plan. The finished surface needs a gentle, controlled fall away from the house and any other buildings. It should not be made completely flat simply because a flat lawn looks appealing.

The required gradient is usually subtle. A well-planned fall should not feel uncomfortable underfoot or make furniture appear noticeably tilted, but it must be enough to move surface water away. Where an artificial lawn is being installed, the formation beneath the grass is just as important as the visible surface. A neat fitting cannot compensate for an incorrectly prepared base.

Door thresholds, air bricks and damp-proof courses need particular care. Finished ground levels must not be raised so high that they bridge protective details on the property. This is one reason a site survey is valuable: drainage, excavation depth and finished levels must be considered together rather than as separate jobs.

Identify the soil type and any compaction

Soil affects how quickly water can soak away. Sandy ground usually drains freely, although it can still suffer from surface pooling if the garden levels are wrong. Clay-heavy ground is slower to drain and can become waterlogged after sustained rainfall. Many gardens have mixed conditions, with compacted areas near patios, old paths or previous building work.

A simple soakaway may work well in one garden and perform poorly a few streets away. Its suitability depends on whether the ground can accept water at the required rate, as well as the available space and distance from buildings. This should be assessed properly before a drainage feature is included in the design.

Compaction is another common issue. Soil and sub-base materials can be too dense for water to move through efficiently, especially where machinery, foot traffic or old hardstanding has compressed the ground. Equally, a poorly built base that has not been compacted correctly can move and develop hollows. Good drainage needs both permeability and stability, which is why material choice and installation method matter.

Choose the drainage method to suit the problem

There is no single drainage system that suits every garden. For a gently sloping area with otherwise sound ground, shaping the levels and using a free-draining foundation may be enough. For a low-lying garden that receives run-off from patios or neighbouring ground, more directed drainage may be needed.

A channel drain can collect water where paving meets a lawn or where rainfall reaches the base of a retaining edge. A French drain, typically a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe, can intercept water moving through the ground. Land drains may be used to collect water from larger areas and direct it towards an appropriate discharge point. Each option has a place, but adding drainage pipes without a suitable outlet only moves the water temporarily.

The final destination is often the most important part of the plan. Depending on the property and local arrangements, water may discharge to a suitable soakaway, an existing approved drainage connection or another permitted point. It must not be directed towards a neighbour’s garden, a public footpath or the foundations of the house.

Consider patios, edging and other hard surfaces

Hard landscaping can create unexpected drainage issues. Patios, paths and driveways shed water much faster than planted ground, particularly during a heavy downpour. If a new lawn sits below a patio without a channel or fall to intercept that run-off, water may repeatedly collect along the edge.

Edging should also be planned as part of the drainage layout. Solid concrete haunching, sleepers and raised borders can act like small dams if they block a natural route for water. That does not mean they should be avoided, but their position and construction need to allow the proposed levels and drainage system to work.

Artificial grass is permeable, but it is not a drainage system in itself. Rainwater passes through the backing, then relies on the layers below to drain and remain stable. If water is trapped in the sub-base or the surface has been laid to a low point, the lawn can feel soft and may develop dips over time. The quality of the groundwork is what protects the finished result.

Allow for real use, not just rainfall

A garden used by children, dogs or frequent visitors needs a drainage plan that supports regular footfall as well as wet weather. Repeated use of one route, such as the path from the back door to a gate, can compact the ground beneath and around a lawn. Areas below garden furniture, play equipment or a trampoline may also receive less airflow and dry more slowly.

Pet areas deserve a practical conversation at the planning stage. Urine, wash-down water and regular cleaning can place extra demand on the drainage beneath an artificial lawn. The answer may be a more free-draining build-up in that area, a considered fall or a separate arrangement around a kennel or utility space. The right choice depends on how the garden is actually used.

Plan for maintenance access

Even well-designed drainage needs occasional attention. Channels can collect leaves, gravel and silt. Gullies may need clearing, and inspection points should not be buried beneath fixed decking, sheds or heavy planters. A drainage plan that cannot be accessed is difficult to maintain when a problem develops.

It is also sensible to keep roof-water management in mind. Overflowing gutters and poorly positioned downpipes can overload a lawn area, particularly during winter. Resolving these issues before a new lawn is installed is usually far less disruptive than lifting finished surfaces later.

When a professional assessment is worthwhile

A straightforward garden with a mild natural fall may only need sensible ground preparation. However, professional advice is worthwhile where water sits for days, the garden slopes towards the property, there are retaining walls, or several paved areas drain into the same space. These situations require levels to be checked carefully and may involve drainage routes that need to be agreed before work begins.
